Different variants of genes, associated with alcohol metabolism, cause us to degrade ethanol fast or more slowly, to be more or less sensitive to the effects of ethanol and to respond to ethanol differently.

 A specific variant of the researched gene is associated with slower caffeine metabolism due to a less active form of caffeine metabolizing enzyme. Individuals with slower caffeine metabolism are at higher risk of myocardial infarction when consuming more significant amounts of caffeinated drinks. Fast caffeine metabolizers do not have to avoid caffeine and are not at higher risk of myocardial infarct- MI due to caffeine consumption.

 

Some variants of the nicotine receptor coding for the gene affect the level of nicotine dependence and consequently increase the risk of developing smoking-associated diseases.
